Get to Know Me

Play has always been my passion, escape, and how I've learned. I love dynamic mechanics, complicated systems, and engaging narrative, especially when they blend together to create something more than the sum of their parts. Game design for me is more lifestyle than occupation and I'm constantly tinkering with new ideas, systems, and mechanics. In that endeavor I have created countless spreadsheets, documents, and prototypes chronicling ideas which may never be fully realized.

When I'm not working on a project I'm usually reading stories, playing games (whether tabletop or digital), watching youtube, or streaming shows. I also love to cook, it's where I find my zen, or discovering. Although, it's not long until some small detail I come across in life or the media I'm consuming to spark a new idea and pull my attention away.

Now for the boring stuff. If you didn't look at my resume, I've worked in and around games for a few years now, have a MFA in Interactive Media from University of Central Florida's, and a  BFA in Game Design from New York University.

My Artistic Approach

There is no such thing as an original story.

A shocking truth I glommed onto at a young age before an English teacher really put it into words for me, but it is a truth. Little did I know she was misquoting Mark Twain, but I think that's appropriate here. Creativity doesn't come from nowhere. Everything I encounter, everything I know, is inspiration. Whether it's the subtle quirks in a person's gait, a crazy plot twist, a combat mechanic I've never seen before, or whatever is going on with carcinization, they all inspire me.

So I experiment. I mix and match details, drawing on my  experiences and every piece of media I've consumed. Creativity is about finding what works. How to put a spin on something familiar that makes it feel fresh and new. When something doesn't seem to work, I want to know why?

World building was for a long time, something I just did in my head. As a kid I would rotate different books, shows, and games in my head and mash them together. Now I write and DM for D&D, still obsessed with imagining and playing in different worlds.

"There is no such thing as a new idea. It is impossible. We simply take a lot of old ideas and put them into a sort of mental kaleidoscope. We give them a turn and they make new and curious combinations."
~Mark Twain
